The Company
A leading IT Asset Disposal and e-waste company, committed to the environment.
Our Story
The problem
Dispose-IT was founded in 2015, with over 25 years of IT hardware experience. The founders realised that our industry imports and sells millions of devices each year, with little regard for where all the tech and waste ends up.
They set out to create an industry solution to the growing toxic e-waste problem in the country, with a primary objective to ensuring that used technology can be returned and repurposed and made available at affordable costs to underprivileged schools, families and small businesses in South Africa.
The Challenge
Not many corporate companies had structured programs for disposing of their assets and e-waste, and required assistance.
Working with distributors, resellers and customers, we embarked on a successful 3-year plan to create after-market services that encourage compliant disposal of end-of-term assets and electronic waste.
This would ensure that devices are either re-purposed to extend their life before discarding them, or properly recycled into their commodities to avoid landfill or illegal export.
Disposing of IT Assets is complex. It requires a knowledge of Asset Management, Logistics, Risk Management, IT Hardware and Services, Data Security, Environmental Legislation and much more.
The Solution
In order to do this effectively, a large investment was required in facilities, people, processes and licenses. We have 3 facilities in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, modeled to global IT Asset Disposal ("ITAD") standards - and an approved agent network countrywide and through Africa.
We deeply understand the business, and help the IT channel and our customers extract value from their assets whilst managing the risks associated with disposing of assets.
We are now the trusted African partner of many global companies who trust Dispose-IT with their IT Asset Disposals and Data Destruction.
Computerlab
We are passionate about empowering disadvantaged communities with technology for education. In 2019, we were instrumental in setting up Computerlab, a non-profit initiative aimed at donating sustainable computer learning environments in underprivileged schools. In 2020, we assisted HP to launch HP Refresh in South Africa, a casue aimed at crowdsourcing computers to donate to learners who could not afford a device.
Resellers and Partners
We have built a compliant framework of services that IT Resellers offer to their customers.
This helps them complete the product lifecycle of their offering, without having to make large investments in infrastructure. We provide all the compliance and help with the heavy lifting.
What is IT Asset Disposal?
Companies and IT resellers are faced regularly with decisions of whether to resell, upgrade, or dispose of IT equipment. ‘IT Asset Disposition’, referred to as ITAD, is the business built around the disposal of obsolete IT and electronic equipment.
Is IT Asset Disposal simple?
In the past, ITAD was perceived to be a simple process of disposing of assets to the highest bidder. However, now with the introduction of environmental and data legislation, the risks of not disposing IT assets correctly have elevated considerably. This makes the process of disposing of IT assets correctly more complicated without the assistance of professionals. These risks include fines of up to R10 million and long jail terms for irresponsible data loss or improper disposal. With the introduction of environmental and data legislation, the risks of ITAD have elevated considerably. Fines of up to R10m and 10 year jail terms are pending for irresponsible data loss or improper disposal.
